Scott Saffold

Physician and Medical Director

Scott H. Saffold, MD, MBA is a physician, educator, and healthcare leader whose career has centered on expanding access to specialty care while building durable, community-rooted medical organizations. He is the founder of Chesapeake Bay ENT and serves as Medical Director of the Virginia Sinus Center, overseeing clinical strategy, workforce development, and long-term organizational planning.

Dr. Saffold began his academic training at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a degree in Cell Biology. He received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College, graduating with multiple academic honors and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha. Following a general surgery internship at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he completed a National Institutes of Health–funded research fellowship in immunology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His research focused on tumor immunology and immune response kinetics, work that continues to inform his evidence-based approach to patient care. He then completed residency training in otolaryngology at Oregon Health Sciences University.

In 2001, Dr. Saffold founded Chesapeake Bay ENT with the goal of bringing comprehensive ear, nose, and throat care to communities that historically had limited access to specialty services. Rather than consolidating care in a single metropolitan hub, he developed a distributed model that placed clinics directly within both suburban and rural communities. This structure required careful attention to clinical standards, oversight, and operational systems to ensure consistency across locations.

A significant portion of his leadership focus has been dedicated to advanced practice provider development. Well before workforce shortages became widely discussed, he implemented structured training pathways, mentorship programs, and outcome-based oversight to responsibly expand access while maintaining quality. Many clinicians who trained within this framework have progressed into leadership roles within the organization and beyond.

Clinically, Dr. Saffold’s work includes the management of chronic sinus disease, inflammatory airway disorders, minimally invasive sinus procedures, and comprehensive sleep-related breathing evaluation. In recent years, he has helped develop programs integrating biologic therapies for type 2 inflammatory disease and comprehensive approaches to sleep apnea that emphasize individualized treatment planning.

Dr. Saffold earned a Master of Business Administration from Old Dominion University, strengthening his expertise in healthcare finance, organizational design, and long-term sustainability planning. His leadership style is disciplined and data-informed, emphasizing measurable outcomes, responsible growth, and operational accountability.

He remains actively engaged in mentorship, medical education, and community initiatives, including teaching anatomy to medical students and supporting workforce development efforts. He has also committed to providing pro bono expert consultation for physicians navigating complex regulatory challenges.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Saffold values endurance athletics, lifelong learning, and family life. The principles that guide his professional work—consistency, preparation, and steady improvement—also shape his personal pursuits.

His long-term goal is to leave behind institutions that demonstrate that high clinical standards, access to care, and operational excellence can coexist within community-based medicine.
